Staffordshire Police have arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of criminal damage and public order offences, following the stabbing near Newport Road, Stafford, at around 7pm last Thursday. The victim, who was approached from behind while walking a public footpath, remains in a stable but critical condition.
Police release clearer CCTV images
Detectives have now issued sharper CCTV footage showing a man they believe is the suspect at around 6:36pm - before the attack took place. Officers are appealing for anyone who saw him in the Newport Road and Highfields area of Stafford that evening to come forward.
The suspect is described as being in his mid-to-late-20s, of average build and of Eastern European descent.
Police ask the public for help
Detective Chief Inspector Ian Fitzgerald said the investigation is "moving at pace" and thanked those who have already responded to earlier appeals. He added: "We still need your help to identify the man - even the smallest detail could prove significant."
A police scene remains in place, with officers in the area to support local residents. Anyone with information should contact Staffordshire Police.
