School drop-off and pick-up times can be very busy, creating increased risks for children, parents, and other road users. Parking restrictions are in place to help keep everyone safe, and motorists are encouraged to follow the Highway Code at all times.
School Keep Clear markings
Most schools have yellow zigzag markings outside their entrances, often with a "School Keep Clear" sign. These are there to help children cross safely, reduce congestion, and keep everyone moving. You must not park, wait, or stop on these markings - even briefly. Doing so can seriously block visibility for children and drivers alike.
Parking directly opposite a school entrance (even where it is technically legal) can be just as dangerous, as it narrows the road and makes it harder for children to see oncoming traffic. Please avoid it if you can.
Tips for a safer school run
- Leave home a little earlier so you are not rushed
- Park a short distance away and walk the rest - it all adds up for children too
- Never block driveways or access routes for local residents
- Stay alert for children who may cross the road unexpectedly
- Turn your engine off while waiting - idling engines contribute to poor air quality and are harmful to children's health
Fines and enforcement
Parking in restricted areas outside schools can result in a Penalty Charge Notice or Fixed Penalty Notice. More importantly, repeat unsafe parking puts children at unnecessary risk.
A few extra minutes spent parking responsibly can make a real difference to the safety of our community's children.
