Disposable BBQ sales banned as fire crews face record demand

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue has welcomed a temporary national ban on disposable barbecue sales after crews attended 600 outdoor fires in a single month.

Fire crews across Staffordshire have been stretched to their limits this summer, responding to an average of 20 outdoor fires every day last month. That is nearly double the demand seen at the same point last year.

Why the ban?

Disposable barbecues are considered one of the biggest outdoor fire risks, particularly during dry spells. They can quickly get out of control and ignite the ground beneath them. They were already banned in places like Cannock Chase before the national measure came into force.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Jim Bywater said: "This summer has already been extremely demanding for our firefighters, and our resources are stretched to the limit. We need everyone to do their bit in helping us keep Staffordshire safe."

What happens if bans are ignored?

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue is working with Staffordshire Police to take action against anyone who ignores the ban or deliberately starts fires. Three people have already been arrested in connection with a series of recent fires, and several investigations are ongoing.

Residents are urged to enjoy the countryside responsibly and respect any local fire restrictions in place.
