Drivers in and around Gnosall will be familiar with the sight of horses and riders sharing roads and lanes, and road safety around equestrians is always an ongoing concern across the area.
The impact of hazardous driving on horses cannot be understated - there are too many accidents involving horses and their riders across the UK.
Motorists are reminded of some simple precautions you can take when approaching a rider on a horse.
What to do if you see a horse on the road
- Slow down to a maximum of 10mph
- Be patient. Do not sound your horn or rev your engine
- Due to the lack of noise, be aware that electric vehicles can surprise horses
- Pass wide and slow, giving at least two metres of space
- Drive slowly away once you have passed
Reporting incidents
If you are a horse rider and experience a dangerous incident on the road, you can log it on the Horse i app, run by the British Horse Society. If the incident was captured on video, it can be reported to police via Operation Snap. Otherwise, contact police online, by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency.
