A working group at Stafford Borough Council has recommended setting up a new Town Council for Stafford town, following a six-week public consultation that drew more than 1,000 responses.
Around 65% of respondents were in favour, with only 27% opposed. All households in the affected areas were contacted directly and invited to have their say.
The move comes ahead of major changes to local government in Staffordshire. From 2028, existing councils - including Stafford Borough Council - will be replaced by larger unitary authorities. Stafford is currently the only unparished area of the borough, raising concerns about a loss of local representation for the county town.
What happens next?
The recommendations will go before the Full Council in September. If approved, elections for the new Town Council would be held in 2027, with councillors serving a community of around 47,000 residents.
Council Leader Aidan Godfrey said: "The response demonstrates how strongly people feel about the future governance of Stafford. These views have played a vital role in shaping the recommendations, and we will continue to ensure local voices are at the heart of this process as it moves forward."
