Over 4,000 potholes fixed in August

Staffordshire's highways teams repaired more than 4,000 potholes in August alone, pushing the county's total to over 22,000 fixes since April.

Staffordshire County Council's highways crews patched 4,022 potholes in August - up from 3,183 in the same month last year. That brings the running total to 22,375 repairs since 1 April, as the council pushes toward its target of filling 40,000 potholes by the end of March 2027.

New technology speeding things up

Crews are using a mix of methods to get through the work faster, including:

  • Velocity patching - a one-pass process that cleans, seals and fills a defect in a single operation
  • The JCB Pothole Pro - a machine that prepares larger holes more efficiently before a permanent fix is applied
  • Screeding and traditional cut and break crews - used where the other methods are less suitable

The council says combining these approaches means the right repair can be matched to the right defect, wherever it is in the county - including on roads serving communities like Gnosall.

Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, Peter Mason, said the pace of work reflected how seriously residents' concerns are taken: "More than 22,000 potholes repaired since April shows the scale of what's happening. We're making real improvements for residents, businesses and visitors."
