Record number of potholes filled across Staffordshire in July

Staffordshire highways crews have patched a record 4,750 potholes in July — more than any other month in the past five years.

The dry summer weather has given road repair teams the perfect opportunity to get on top of pothole repairs, with crews working throughout July to fix as many defects as possible across the county, including roads in and around Gnosall.

The July total of 4,750 potholes is well up on the 3,583 fixed in the same month last year, and adds to Staffordshire County Council's target of repairing 40,000 potholes by the end of March 2027.

Teams have been using a range of methods to speed up repairs, including:

  • Traditional cut and break techniques
  • Velocity patching
  • Screeding

Work is set to continue throughout the school summer holidays, with crews aiming to fix as many defects as possible while roads are quieter.

Peter Mason, Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said the focus on potholes reflects the volume of feedback councillors receive from residents. He added that an extra £15 million is being invested over the next two years into repairing and maintaining Staffordshire's roads.
