The council's autumn 2026 quarterly update highlights improvements across five areas: people, economy, connectivity, communities and value for money. The report is due to be considered by Cabinet on 21 October 2026.
What's going well
Council leader Martin Murray pointed to a range of positive developments, including investment in specialist education, road improvements and support for local businesses. He said the authority is "making a real difference across our communities" while keeping an eye on longer-term priorities.
Financial pressures remain
Cabinet Member for Finance Sean Bagguley said overall financial health is stable, but acknowledged ongoing pressure in children's services, driven by rising demand and the costs of caring for vulnerable children. He added that the council will "spend what is needed to protect frontline services" while ensuring good value for taxpayers.
