Staffordshire launches Orange Button suicide prevention scheme

A new scheme is giving Staffordshire residents free training to help spot when someone is struggling and point them toward support.

Staffordshire County Council has launched the Orange Button scheme to build a community network of people trained in suicide awareness. Anyone who completes the free online training receives an Orange Button badge to wear, signalling they are willing to listen, have a supportive conversation, and help connect people with services.

Why it matters

Around nine people a month die by suicide across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. Men aged between 40 and 59 are most at risk. The scheme aims to encourage earlier conversations before a crisis point is reached.

How to get involved

The training is free and open to individuals, community groups, businesses and organisations. To sign up or find out more, visit staffordshire.gov.uk/orangebutton.

If you need help now

If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available:

  • Call NHS 111 and select the mental health option
  • Contact your GP
  • Call Samaritans free on 116 123
