If you've ever thought about becoming a firefighter, now could be your chance. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has announced a new recruitment drive for full-time firefighters, with 16 positions up for grabs.
Applications open on Monday 28 September and close on Sunday 11 October. The service is keen to attract people from all walks of life to help build a diverse team. The vacancies are due to retirements rather than any increase in demand, though the service has just experienced its busiest summer on record.
More than just fighting fires
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Michelle Hickmott, who has worked in the service for 19 years, says the role is far broader than most people realise:
- Home visits for vulnerable residents
- Fire safety advice for local businesses
- Educational visits to schools
- Community events and engagement
All new recruits will complete an apprenticeship, with further development supported for those looking to progress into leadership or specialist roles.
A dream job in practice
Firefighter Thea Millward, who joined during the last recruitment round two years ago, describes it as a childhood dream come true. "Every day is different, you're always learning and pushing yourself to strive for excellence," she said.
