Staffs Fire Sevice share BBQ tips to stay safe

Warm weather means BBQ season is here — but Staffordshire Fire Service is urging residents to take care to avoid a fun day turning into an emergency.

Before you light up

  • Set up your BBQ on flat, stable ground well away from fences, sheds, trees and anything that could catch fire.
  • Keep it away from garden furniture and never use it inside a building, tent or garage.
  • Never use petrol or other accelerants to start or boost a BBQ.

While you're cooking

  • Never leave a lit BBQ unattended — keep a close eye on it at all times.
  • Keep children and pets well away from the cooking area.
  • Have a bucket of water, sand or a garden hose nearby just in case.

When you're done

  • Wait for the coals to cool completely before disposing of ash — this can take several hours.
  • Never put hot ash in a bin or place the BBQ inside until it is fully cold.
