Criminals are sending fake texts, emails and phone calls claiming to be from government departments, warning that residents need to apply for a Winter Fuel Payment, confirm their details or hand over bank account information.
What you need to know
In most cases, eligible people receive Winter Fuel Payments automatically. Government departments will never contact you by text asking for bank details or directing you to a website to claim a payment.
Anthony Screen, Cabinet Member for Community Safety at Staffordshire County Council, said: "Criminals are very good at making messages look genuine, often using official logos and convincing language. If you receive a text, email or phone call asking you to claim a Winter Fuel Payment or provide personal or banking information, treat it with extreme caution."
He added: "We would particularly encourage people to speak with older relatives, friends and neighbours about these scams. A simple conversation could prevent someone from becoming a victim."
How to protect yourself
- Never share bank details in response to an unsolicited text, email or phone call
- Do not click links in unexpected messages claiming to be from a government department
- If in doubt, contact the organisation directly using a number you know to be genuine
- Talk to older neighbours, friends and family about what to look out for
If you think you have been targeted, report it to the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133.
