A freight train came off the tracks at low speed near Bilbrook, close to Wolverhampton, on Tuesday, damaging overhead electric wires and their supporting structures. The incident has caused widespread cancellations and service changes across several routes.
Crucially for local residents, all lines between Wolverhampton, Stafford and Shrewsbury have been affected, with trains unable to run in either direction.
The following operators are all experiencing disruption:
- Avanti West Coast
- CrossCountry
- London Northwestern Railway
- Transport for Wales
- West Midlands Railway
Rail replacement buses are running between Telford and Wolverhampton, with onward rail travel available from Telford Central to Shrewsbury. A bus shuttle is also operating between Birmingham and Wolverhampton via Darlaston and Willenhall.
If you have a ticket affected by the disruption, you should be able to use it on selected alternative services at no extra cost. Avanti West Coast passengers can also travel on the service immediately before or after their booked train.
West Midlands Railway has warned that repairs to the damaged overhead wires may not be completed until Thursday, so disruption could continue for some time yet. It is worth checking your journey before you travel.
