Bonfire Night fireworks safety advice for Gnosall residents

With Bonfire Night approaching, residents are urged to buy fireworks only from reputable retailers and stay safe.

If you are planning a fireworks display at home in Gnosall this November, it is worth taking a moment to think about where you are buying your fireworks from. Cheap fireworks sold through social media, pop-up stalls or unofficial private sellers may be counterfeit, illegal or simply fail to meet UK safety standards. The risks and dangers are real.

Buy from reputable retailers

Staffordshire County Council's Trading Standards team is already carrying out checks on businesses selling fireworks ahead of Bonfire Night. But residents can play their part too. Only buy fireworks from established, reputable retailers. If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.

And remember, it is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under 18.

Think about your neighbours

A little communication goes a long way. If you are planning a display, let your immediate neighbours know in advance. Posting on local social media groups is a good idea too, giving people nearby the chance to plan ahead. Unexpected fireworks late at night can be unsettling, particularly for elderly residents, young children or anyone with anxiety.

Think about pets and animals

Pets can find fireworks genuinely distressing. Dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals are sensitive to loud bangs and flashes of light. If you know a display is happening nearby, bring pets indoors beforehand, close windows and curtains, and provide a safe, quiet space for them to shelter. If you are a pet owner yourself, plan your display with this in mind and keep it as brief and considerate as possible.

Key points to remember

  • Only buy fireworks from reputable, authorised retailers
  • Never buy from unofficial sellers, pop-up stalls or via social media listings
  • It is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under 18
  • Let your neighbours know in advance if you are planning a display
  • Bring pets indoors and provide them with a calm, safe space
  • Follow the firework code and the instructions on every firework

Bonfire Night can be a wonderful community occasion. A bit of planning and consideration makes it safer and more enjoyable for everyone in Gnosall.
